As summer comes to an end, the Buda Public Library wraps up another exciting summer of fun – fun with a mission – to keep youth of our community reading. Experts agree that children should not take a vacation from reading and other brain stimulating activities. In fact, “summer vacations cause disadvantaged children to fall behind.” reports Karl Alexander, John Hopkins University professor who recently completed a 27 year study following 800 people. When asked what can be done, Alexander replied, “Encourage them [families] to get library cards.”
Each summer the Buda Public Library hosts a summer reading club where participants keep track of independent reading on colorful logs. Children being read to keep track on Title logs as do early readers. Chapter book readers record minutes read on Time Logs. Club members turn completed log in, pick up another log, receive a free book and other prizes, and are given a chance ticket for a “WOW” prize. Local businesses donated “WOW” prizes which went a long way toward encouraging children to read. “I know this program helps keep my kids reading all summer long!” said parent Cheri Heldstab.
This year the library offered a separate Teen Reading Club. Reading clubs kicked-off on May 28th and concluded with an awards ceremony on August 13th for Summer Reading Club members and August 14 for Teen Club members.Top readers turning in Time Logs were:
